Montreal had several workshops of Italian sculptors in the 19th and 20th centuries specializing in the production of religious art. Carlo Catelli was among the first generation of Italians to immigrate to Montreal in the 1840s. Like the other Italian artists who succeeded him, he mainly used plaster as a material for his production of religious sculptures. The Musée des Hospitalières offers you a discovery tour highlighting some of these great sculptors and renowned workshops: Carlo Catelli, several members of the Carli and Petrucci families as well as Joseph Guardo.
The tour offers three places: the Musée des Hospitalières which has one of the most beautiful statuary ensembles of this period, commissioned from Catelli in 1862 by the Religious Hospitallers of Saint-Joseph, the Nativity of the Holy Virgin of Hochelaga Church and its monumental frieze of more than 320 figures by sculptors Carli and Petrucci representing the Apotheosis of the Virgin, the founders of Montreal and the main religious communities of Montreal and, finally, the Saint-Jean-Berchmans Church where Joseph Guardo distinguished himself with several statues including those of the patron saint of the parish and the four evangelists.
The guided bus tour will take place on Sunday August 4 from 1:00 PM to 4:30 PM. Admission is $25 per person. It is best to reserve in advance by calling 514-849-2919 or writing to [email protected]
